Broad Street Run

I went to the Broad Street Run on Sunday. It was pretty neat.  I was up at 5 am, on a sunday.  We got to the city and rode the train from the stadiums to I forget what stop. There were so many people on the train. Jammed. I felt like I was in India or Japan or some country where they routinely jam an unsafe number of people onto the trains. I kept thinking about how f*cked I would be if someone had a bomb. It was terrible. I was in a seat cuz we were one of the first people on the train. At every stop more and more people pushed themselves in. There was a pole next to me and people were holding on to it.  I saw a black lady's hand on the pole, but couldn't see her through the mass of bodies. Just her hand and her rather big diamond on her engagement ring. Crazy packed. And it was hot. And people were all talking about the race and the guy next to me never shut up. Ever.  He was all cheery and excited and he said to me, "So have you run this before?" and I said totally deadpan "No I don't do that. I don't run. I drive." I thought it was kinda funny but he seemed offended or something. He didn't talk to me anymore.

So we get off the train and there are just hordes of people everywhere. We had to go pick up his race number etc and it was like trying to walk through a crowded bar, but like 15,000 people were in the bar. crazy.  People were pissing everywhere you looked. They had port-a-potties but the lines were so long.  Runners are kinda dirty and gross. Lol. There were jackets and sweatshirts and sweatpants and gym bags and stuff on the side of the road at the starting line. I don't know if they expected their clothes to be there when they got back or not. At the back of the long mob of runners were a line of street sweepers.

Anyway the race started and I got back on the train back to the stadiums. The race ended in the Navy Yard. I was meeting a friend at the stadiums. She was coming from work and we met up and watched the people we knew run by.  There were some sights. Of course I didn't take any pictures. I went to take pictures of the people I knew, but when they were running by I tried to take some pictures and the camera had turned itself off to save the battery. So I turned it back on and the lense cap was on and by that time they were past me. Yeah I'm an idiot.  Sometimes I feel like Charlie Brown.

So there were these people handing out water as the people ran by and the one girl had a sign that said "One mile to go". I was standing there for about 30 minutes before I realized that I had to walk a mile to the finish line. I was not happy! All in all it was kinda neat. It was cool to look up and down Broad street and see nothing but people. Over 13,000 people crossed the finish line.  Maybe I'll run it next year. :-)

Then we all went to lunch at The Cheesecake Factory.  I got french toast. I love french toast.

  1. The best part of that entire day had to be the french toast.

  2. Nah I was rather let down with the french toast. It had a weird taste, like they cooked it on the same grill as some kind of meat dish. I couldnt figure out what it tasted like. It didn’t all taste like that. just one or two of the pieces. Oh I still ate it. I’m fat and am not about to pass up french toast.
